Tess And The Mule
_
Leaning
over the side of the Mule (sort of like a four wheel drive golf cart), I held
tight to Sparkie’s collar with one hand and gripped the side with the other. I
was sitting in the back of the Mule with Sparkie; Jessica and Tess were sitting
in the front seat by Daddy. We stopped near to the bus. Mummy came over. “Did
you bring the milk?” she asked. “No, I forgot,” said Daddy, “We’ll go back and
get some.” Honda, a female Border collie x Bull Arab who belonged to another
worker called James, bounded out to meet us. Tess struggled to get down. “Do
you think I could let Tess run alongside with Honda?” asked Jessica. I didn’t
hear Daddy’s answer, but he must have said yes because Jessica unclipped Tess’s
lead. Tess jumped out. Sparkie scrambled around so she could see Tess and
Honda. Daddy started to drive. As we went down the track to the cowshed, Tess
and Honda raced alongside the Mule. They ran side by side along the right side
and I lost sight of them as they passed by. All of a sudden we seemed to hit a
bump and I heard Tess yelping and howling. Oh,
no! I thought in horror, We’re
running over Tess!! Everything seemed to be in slow motion. Daddy hit the
brakes and Jessica leapt from her seat before they even stopped. Sparkie
panicked and leapt over the side. I glanced around behind me and saw Tess tearing
up the track towards the bus with Jessica running after her. “Daddy, wait,
Sparkie’s not in!” I said, leaping out. I picked up Sparkie to put her back in
but she wasn’t having a bar of it. “I’ll see you back home!” I called to Daddy
as I ran after Jessica and Tess, Sparkie eagerly running beside me. As I ran
over the uneven terrain, I hoped Tess was ok.
But within an hour, Tess joined us for our usual walk. Only a day after this happened, Tess was back to normal. The only way you’d know anything ever happened is that she had a patch of bare skin on her right hind leg and a slight limp.
